![]() ![]() He had tried to install Ventura on a Mac without that much space and received a prompt from the installer telling him he needed to free up at least 25 GB. Without Apple providing specs, I was curious where Charles came up with that 25 GB number, and he told me that it was from personal experience. In it, he says that Ventura requires 25 GB of free space and that its installer clocks in at 12.19 GB, suggesting that it would be safest to add those numbers and make sure you had at least 37 GB free. However, our old friend Charles Edge recently published the necessary details in Free Space Required for Modern macOS Upgrades. Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t published similar specs for either Monterey or Ventura. So what counts as “sufficient” space? In my previous article, I linked to the tech specs for Big Sur, in which Apple says that it could require up to 44.5 GB of available storage. Marc had to restore from backup to bring his MacBook Pro back to working order. Apple fixed that bug in macOS 11.2.1, but I was reminded of it when TidBITS reader Marc Heusser wrote to tell us that upgrading from macOS 12.6.1 Monterey to macOS 13.0.1 Ventura on an M1 MacBook Pro with insufficient free space resulted in errors that prevented the MacBook Pro from booting. Two macOS releases ago, I wrote “ Ensure Sufficient Free Space before Upgrading to Big Sur” (10 February 2021) to warn users that an installer bug could result in a Boot Recovery Assistant loop. #1660: OS updates for sports and security, Drobo in bankruptcy, why TidBITS doesn't cover rumorsĮnsure Sufficient Free Space before Upgrading to Ventura.#1661: Mimestream app for Gmail, auto-post WordPress headlines to Twitter and Mastodon, My Photo Stream shutting down.#1662: New Macs, 12 top OS features for 2023, vertical tabs in Web browsers, watchOS 9.5.1.#1663: Exploring the Apple Vision Pro, 12 more OS features coming in 2023, new Apple service features, Apollo shuts down.#1664: Real system requirements for OS 2023, beware Siri creating alarms instead of timers. ![]() ![]() ![]() This episode teaches you how to consider 2 very important ingredients for your music journey: consistency and intent.Ġ6:30 - Focusing on quantity and quality of contentġ0:40 - The TERMINA album - first week impressionsġ5:40 - Pre-launch hype vs. And it was there that I first encountered the absolutely unearthly voice of Courtney LaPlante. ![]() Some people might clash with the difficulty spikes in certain levels (I found myself warming up to those pretty quickly), which throw pit after pit and spike after spike your way. The only one I’m not a big fan of is Asteroid Coaster, which has an intriguing gimmick (roller coasters) executed with some clunk, and a bit of thematic crossover with the also space-heavy Starlight Carnival. Aquarium Park is an absolute stunner in 2021 with its lovely blue hues, and Planet Wisp is one of the most relaxing stages I’ve ever played in a Sonic game: mostly because of the tunes. The very first theme (Tropical Resort) paints a neon-laden picture of how things are going to go, as the Colors name continues to earn its keep. I can’t stress enough how gorgeous the levels are, especially with a new coat of paint. Seeing Jet Set Radio and Skies of Arcadia reduced to a cameo as an image yet again stings a bit, but I’ll get over it. Most of the unlock bonuses are cosmetic too, like extra shoes, gloves, speed trails, and avatars. ![]() That’s the key phrase: “existing.” It’s nothing to write home about, as Metal Sonic running past you (or tailing you) is circumstantial at best, but as a bonus, I found a handful of them to be a fun distraction - at only a few minutes each, they’re not a chore, even if I wish it had a little more flair. There’s a lot of sneaky level design and hidden areas, and as you progress, stages become more and more open as a result. Several of the standout levels allow players to approach platforming challenges or puzzles with completely different routes, which had me wanting to replay them immediately after a clear. The drill levels are surprisingly deep for instance, with half the level secretly buried within what is ostensibly an optional power-up. ![]() This time around I had an opportunity to stop and smell the roses more, and appreciated the expansive stages that some of these Wisps enable. But if you’re looking for a 100% clear rate, there’s plenty of nuance to learn. If you want, you can speed through most stages and warp into the goal ring. Playing through Colors again, one of the standout elements is how optional a lot of these mechanics are. Wisps are deliberately placed in each stage, with some layouts built entirely around certain power-ups. The laser lets you aim a quick “zap” dash, the drill drives you into the ground (and in water), and so on. ![]() Am not a big Sonic fan anyway (never have been) but thought I might find this game interesting but where the glory of the original shone like a clean polished diamond when it first came out the remaster is a piece of junk I cannot recommend to anyone. The big gimmick this time is Wisps, which are basically cute ghost-like power-ups that are scattered about (and imprisoned) each stage. You may be expecting (and I half-expected to be writing) some soliloquy on Plato and Hippocrates and whatever here, but Elemental doesn’t give us that. Honestly, that’s fine - everyone gets some swings and misses - but Disney for some reason decided to push Pixar’s best recent offering, Turning Red, straight to Disney+ with no theatrical option, probably in a now-cooling enthusiasm about streaming. In 2006, Disney acquired Pixar, and alongside other unfortunate factors, the “can’t-miss” reputation has slowly declined, with relative duds like The Good Dinosaur, the less-than-loved Cars series (at least among the parents of their target audience), and Lightyear (want to feel old?
